Itching is a normal condition for many people and it is manifested by an unpleasant feeling in the skin that causes an immediate reaction for scratching the affected area. The itching can be experienced at a specific skin area or on the whole body.
The most probable reason for the occurrence of itching is the release of chemicals like histamine that dries the skin. It can affect both adults and children and it can be a side effect of certain used drugs.
If it happens sparingly, it is not a concerning issue, but if it is very frequent it can be very embarrassing. However, you need to be aware that the body always sends signals when something wrong is happening and the itching can be also an indication of a certain serious disease.
7 Common Reasons for the Occurrence of Itching
- Thyroid disorders
Hypothyroidism is a thyroid disorder that is characterized with low production of thyroid hormones and it is being manifested by skin dryness, redness, itching and rashes in the folds of the skin.
- Dermatitis and allergies
Dermatitis is a skin inflammation that may be manifested by itching or redness and may be related to allergic rhinitis, in case of atopic dermatitis. So, if you experience an allergy, ensure a visit to a dermatologist. On the other hand, an allergic reaction can occur after a contact with dust, drugs, insect bites or having eaten some allergenic foods.
High blood glucose levels, that a result of diabetes, affect the skin. In such case, plaques are being formed at certain body parts leading to skin discoloration and itching.
- Kidney dysfunction
If itching occurs it may suggest that there is a kidney dysfunction. This happens due to the inability of the kidney to remove waste and toxins from the blood, and some of them will build-up and cause rashes.
- Liver disorders
Sudden itching can be an indication of a liver issue. Liver disorders occur when the liver loses its optimal performance and symptoms like pruritus can cause severe itching that is difficult to control.
Pruritus can also occur in pregnant women but it can only mean that the skin needs hydration. Yet, if the itching occurs all over the body it may suggest a case of cholestasis which is a failure of the liver to properly remove bile acids. In this case you will need an immediate medical attention.
In this period the female body experiences many physical changes, including the condition of the hair, skin, nails, etc. These changes are associated with the hormonal variation occurring in the female body. Symptoms like redness, skin drying, and itching are often noticeable.
How to soothe and prevent itching?
If your skin starts to get dry, make sure to hydrate it well. The optimal hydration can get achieved via the application of essential oils, having regular baths or drinking plenty of water.
If you experience itching, avoid scratching yourself with your nails as in that way you are exposing your skin to microbes. If you need to relieve the itching use your palm for that.
Excessive itching in children can be due to the presence of lice, therefore check your child’s scalp regularly.
You can prevent the appearance of insect bites and try to follow a healthy and balanced diet for better health.
If you experience persistent itching and you cannot determine its origin, you need to consult a dermatologist.
