4 Natural Ways to Repel Flies Quickly (Inside & Outside)

Flies are really a great nuisance as they fly all over us. In those cases we wave our hands around us in order to make them go away, however they still come back. Not to mention the fact that they are fast and can easily get away.

They can live up to a month and in that period they constantly multiply and because of that it is very difficult to get rid of them. Nonetheless, there are easy ways to eliminate these pesky parasites.

Their weakness is smell and light, they are so naturally drawn to them that we can use this as our advantage. We can get rid of them easily by using herbs and essential oils with strong scents. They will act as natural repellents and in that way we shall get free of the flies. Here are some natural ways of repelling flies:

DIY Fly Repellent Spray

There are also commercial repelling sprays which are very effective against flies but most of them are packed with harmful chemicals. Therefore, it is better to use a homemade repellent spray which is consisted of natural substances. For the preparation of this spray you can use essential oils such as lemongrass and peppermint known for their strong scent.

Needed things:

  • 2 tablespoons of diluted liquid dish soap
  • 10 to 12 drops of lemongrass essential oil
  • 10 to12 drops of peppermint essential oil
  • 1 cup of water
  • A spray bottle


Put in the spray bottle water and the dish soap. After that, include the peppermint essential oil, and the lemongrass essential oil. Close the spray bottle and then shake it to stir the solution nicely. After that, use it to spray all over your house. You can also prevent the occurrence of flies by spraying this mixture on every 2 weeks.

 Lavender Essential Oil

This essential oil can also act as a powerful fly repellent thanks to its intensive scent. For its use apply it on a sponge so that it is spill-proof.

Needed Things:

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Sponge
  • Jar or can with a lid


You need to apply several drops of lavender essential oil on the sponge, and after that put it into a jar. Make sure to close it tightly, and let it stay for several hours or the best would be to leave it overnight, in the morning the smell will be more concentrated. Place it where the flies are more present, but first open it a little bit, and in that way you will keep the flies at bay.

Cloves and Lemon

Flies do not like at all the smell of cloves, and once mixed with lemon, you have for sure got a powerful natural fly repellent.

Needed Ingredients:

  • Cloves
  • Lemon


Cut the lemon into halves, and then stick the cloves into the pulp. Put the lemon on your table and in that way you will have no problems with flies.

DIY Fly Trap

Apple Cider Vinegar (ACV) Trap

This is an efficient homemade fly trap consisted of apple cider vinegar and some dish soap mixed in a Mason jar. This vinegar is fermented apple juice and once you add the dish soap you will make the perfect trap for the flies.

Needed Ingredients:

  • 2 cups of apple cider vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap
  • Mason jar (covered with a plastic wrap)


Take the Mason jar and pour in it the 1 tablespoon of liquid dish soap. Cover the jar by stretching a piece of plastic wrap, and after that make holes with a toothpick.

Place the trap where flies are most present. The smell of the fermented apple will draw them to enter the trap. Thanks to the plastic wrap they cannot leave the jar, plus there is no stronger smell in the outside which will draw them to leave.

Once the jar is filled with dead flies, clean it and prepare anther trap if needed. Make sure before use of the Mason jar to wash it properly with hot soapy water.

Rotten Fruit Trap

You can also prepare a trap consisted of chopped rotten fruit put in a bowl. Cover the ball with a plastic wrap, and also make punctures by using a toothpick. This trap will not kill the flies, but it will successfully capture them. This trap is easier as we always have some overripe or rotten fruit in our kitchen.

Needed Things:

  • Overripe or rotten fruit
  • A bowl
  • Plastic wrap
  • Toothpick
  • Scissors


Peel the fruit and chop it. Put it in the bowl, and cover it with the plastic wrap. Stretch it tightly over the top of the bowl. With the toothpick, make holes in it. When the trap is full of flies, place the bowl into soapy water for several minutes in order to destroy them. Then, wash it and use it again. The bowls need to be cleaned nicely because if not they acquire unpleasant odor.

Additional tips:

Eucalyptus and citronella essential oils can also help you to repel flies and other insects.

You can as well as prepare a potpourri of the dry herbs of peppermint, lavender, and lemongrass.
