This mixture of fresh and canned fruit, which has a sweet and sour flavour, is very cooling, especially in the summer.

400 g/14 oz can mixed fruit cocktail
400 g/14oz can guavas
2 large bananas
3 apples (optional)
1 tsp ground black pepper
1 tsp salt
½ tsp ground ginger
2 tbsp lemon juice
fresh mint leaves, to garnish
Drain the can of mixed fruit cocktail and place the fruit in a deep mixing bowl.
Mix the the drained fruit cocktail wth the guavas and their syrup so that the fruit is well coated.
Peel the bananas and cut into thick slices.
Peel the apples (optional) and cut into dice.
Add the fresh fruit to the bowl containing the canned fruit and mix together.
Add the ground black pepper, salt and ginger and stir to mix. Add the lemon juice to prevent the banana and apple from turning brown and mix again.
Serve the sweet and sour fruit as a snack garnished with a few fresh mint leaves.
Guavas are tropical fruits with a powerful, exotic smell. You may find fresh guavas in specialist shops and large supermarkets, but the canned variety is more widely available. Surprisingly, they have a higher vitamin C content than many citrus fruits.
